76 Killers Dads…and Counting

76 Killer Dads: Fathers who ended their children’s lives in situations involving child custody, visitation, and/or child support (USA)

Since posting a short list of fathers who had killed their children in cases where child custody, visitation, and/or child support was an active contributing factor (just articles published in 2010), several people have asked me for a more comprehensive list.

It’s nearly impossible to come up with a truly comprehensive list. News articles provide incomplete or inaccurate information. Many articles are not readily accessible through a stardard google search. But I am providing you with the a list of the cases that I have collected over the last year or so, coupled with a few cases submitted by others. Most of these murders occurred during the past two years, but not all. If you have information about additional cases that fit the above listed criteria, please send the information to me.

Note that this list does NOT include ALL the fathers who annihilate their families in murder-suicides or kill their children under other circumstances, even when there was a history of domestic violence or child abuse. If child custody, visitation, and/or child support did not appear to play an identifiable role in the child’s death, I did not include the case on the list. If I were to include all fathers who murder their children for any reason (mental illness, carelessness, “frustration,” anger at the mother–but with no apparent or identifiable child custody, visitation, or child support issues), this list would be nearly endless. So this list is not to be taken as reflective or representational of all fathers who murder children.

I apologize in advance for any errors, either in the newspaper articles or in the transcription.

Man in jail for sexually abusing daughter
October 20th, 2009 @ 12:03pm
By Randall Jeppesen

LEHI — A Lehi man is facing 25 counts of forcible sexual abuse after he told police he had been sexually abusing his own teenage daughter.

Word of the abuse first came forward when the victim, now an adult, confided in a camp counselor during the summer, saying she had been repeatedly abused since she was 13.

“The victim disclosed she had been abused by her father,” said Lehi Police Lt. Darren Paul.

Paul says when they were alerted to the abuse, they questioned the man and he talked openly about what happened. He said he abused the girl routinely, a couple of times each month.

The victim kept quiet about the abuse for years. “She had tried to just forget that it had occurred,” Paul said.

Court documents say the man also showed the girl pornography and that he had tried to download child pornography but couldn’t find any. Police do not think the man has harmed any other victims.

The man also faces six counts of forcible sodomy and three counts of dealing harmful materials to a minor.

KSL is not identifying the suspect to protect the victim.

Jury convicts man on 11 counts of sexual conduct with children
By Alexis Bechman

October 13, 2009

A 47-year-old man was sentenced to 220 years in prison after a Gila County Superior Court jury found him guilty of 11 counts of sexual misconduct with his children.

John David Lloyd of Stockton, Calif. was sentenced Sept. 28 after being convicted of having sex with his two children at least 1,000 times while living in Payson nearly 10 years ago. A Gila County jury found Lloyd guilty of the crimes July 30.

“One of the seemingly impossible tasks we ask of victims is to face their abuser, yet these two victims not only stood up to their abuser, but did so with courage and conviction,” said Deputy County Attorney Ramai Alvarez who prosecuted the case along with Lacy Hakim.

Both children testified against Lloyd during the trial.

Presiding Judge Peter Cahill sentenced Lloyd to 20 years on each of the 11 counts to run consecutively.

“All to be served day for day,” said County Attorney Daisy Flores.

According to a police report filed by Payson Police Detective Matt Van Camp, Lloyd’s daughter reported the abuse to a counselor in 2002 when she was 13 years old, several years after the abuse had stopped.

Lloyd’s daughter told authorities during a forensic interview that Lloyd had routinely raped her since she was 4 years old. The abuse started when the family lived at a grandparent’s home in Payson.

According to the report, the girl told police she was raped nearly every night for four months. When she was 5 years old, the family moved from the girl’s grandparent’s home into a home in Payson.

There the abuse continued nearly every night until the girl was 8 years old, she told police. Lloyd reportedly told his daughter he would kill her if she reported the abuse, according to the police report.

The abuse only stopped when Lloyd married. Lloyd’s daughter was eventually removed from the home by Child Protective Services (CPS) after Lloyd reportedly hit his then-wife.

“In attempting to calculate the number of times that (the daughter) would have been sexually abused, molested by her father over the years, it equates to approximately 1,400 times,” the report states.

Lloyd and his wife eventually divorced. The ex-wife was interview by Van Camp during the investigation and she reported that she knew of the abuse because Lloyd’s daughter told her Lloyd touched her inappropriately.

After the girl disclosed the abuse to a counselor, Lloyd’s son came forward in 2002 to also report abuse to a counselor.

In August 2002, the boy underwent a forensic interview by Van Camp where he stated Lloyd assaulted him when he was 11 years old. The sexual abuse happened eight times while the family lived in Payson. The abuse stopped one month before the boy was placed in a foster home.

According to the police report, both children had disclosed the abuse to CPS as early as September 1998. Both children were eventually adopted by family or foster parents.

The Gila County attorney’s office took over the case after it was investigated by the Payson Police Department. Lloyd was brought to Gila County to stand trial after he fought extradiction. Lloyd was eventually charged with 11 counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

Custodial Dad Charged With Felony Child Neglect

Custodial dad charged with felony child neglect (Roanoke, Virginia)

Custodial dad HAROLD GILBERT sure cooked up a cock-and-bull story before abandoning his infant child at a Subway shop. I wonder what the REAL story is with Mom, and how this incoherent, irresponsible moron got custody of a baby (see highlighting in bold below).

Father charged with felony child neglect after leaving baby at Subway

A father is charged with felony child neglect after leaving his child with a Subway employee.

The story ended at a Kroger in north Roanoke, but it began in downtown Roanoke. Police fanned out all over the market area for a call about a possible abduction. That call was prompted by concerned passengers on a Greyhound bus and in the bus station about a man from Maine traveling with a baby.

Witnesses tell News7 the man got off of a Greyhound bus at the downtown Roanoke station, walked up Salem Avenue and into a Subway. That’s where this story takes a bizarre turn.

“The story that he told was [the] mother was at [the] bus station, on drugs. [He was] afraid she’d hurt [the] baby. [He] didn’t want to take her over there. [He] dropped the baby [off] and asked me to watch her for a minute,” said Jessica Wilburn.

She estimates she was left with the stranger’s child for about five minutes. Wilburn says the man, Harold Gilbert, then came back into the shop for the baby and asked to use the phone. Although Gilbert was somewhat panicked, Wilburn said he appeared to be well put together and coherent.

“He said he had the situation under control and that his mom was coming to pick him and his child up,” said Wilburn.

Roanoke police say it wasn’t the mother, but a taxi that picked Gilbert up and dropped him off at the Town Square Kroger. And that’s where police found him.

Police say it turns out Gilbert does have custody of the infant, but because he left her with a Subway employee, he’s now charged with felony child neglect.

Dad Pleads Guilty to Drowning Three Kids

Castillo Pleads Guilty To Drowning Kids
Slayings Occurred At Harbor Hotel In March 2008
POSTED: 10:51 am EDT October 14, 2009
UPDATED: 2:19 pm EDT October 14, 2009

BALTIMORE — A Maryland man has pleaded guilty to drowning his three children in a Baltimore hotel bathtub, a sudden development in a trial that was delayed several times and saw erratic courtroom behavior from the suspect.

Mark Castillo entered the plea Wednesday in a Baltimore city courtroom, about 18 months after the slayings at the Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor on Eutaw Street.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and will serve three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, 11 News learned. The judge is recommending he serve his time at the Patuxent Institute and will request that Castillo be enrolled in some sort of therapy program.

Mark Castillo was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his children, 6-year-old Anthony, 4-year-old Austin and 2-year-old Athena in March 2008.

Jury selection started in the case last week. Castillo had originally pleaded not criminally responsible before changing his plea Wednesday, just before a jury panel was to be brought into the courtroom.

11 News reporter Barry Simms said a judge asked Castillo if he was pleading guilty because he committed the slayings and that Castillo replied, “Yes, your honor.” He had not discussed the plea with his attorneys, Simms reported.

Castillo was charged in the deaths of his children, 6-year-old Anthony, 4-year-old Austin and 2-year-old Athena in March 2008.

Police said Castillo told investigators he drowned the children, then tried to overdose on an over-the-counter pain reliever and stabbed himself in the neck with a steak knife.

The 43-year-old Castillo has a history of mental illness and had been involved in a custody dispute with his former wife.

He calmly described how he drowned the children one by one in a taped interview with police that was played in court last week.

The trial had been postponed several times.

Castillo behaved erratically during court sessions and showed frustration with the slow pace of the proceedings. He tried at one point to fire his public defenders, but later changed his mind.

In December, he was subdued with a stun gun during a divorce hearing. That occurred after he tried to leave while the hearing was in progress.

The drownings were discovered on a Sunday. Police Commissoner Fred Bealefeld said the father was supposed to return his kids to their mother the previous night. The mother called Montgomery County authorities when that didn’t happen, Bealefeld said.

Bealefeld said Castillo and the children spent time that Saturday at the Inner Harbor before checking in to the hotel.

NEW YORK — A father pleaded guilty Friday to strangling his 14-year-old daughter, who was 12 weeks pregnant with his child, then stuffing her body into his apartment building’s boiler and partially burning it.

Miguel Matias told investigators he strangled his daughter Ana with an electrical cord after he found her writing “sex things” on a computer in February 2008.

It was more than a year later, in April, when additional charges of sexual assault were filed after DNA tests uncovered he had impregnated her.

Matias, 35, initially pleaded not guilty and underwent a psychiatric evaluation after he tried to hang himself in prison. He was found fit to stand trial, but his attorney, Roy Schwartz, had asked for additional testing.

After the plea deal to second-degree murder, he faces the faces the maximum 25 years to life in prison, but could have gotten 50 years to life had the case gone to trial, Schwartz said.

“We had to do it. It’s not a triable case,” Schwartz said of the plea.

Ana and her two brothers lived in Allentown, Pa., with their mother, Jocelyn, after the couple separated, and they visited Matias occasionally. To neighbors and relatives, Matias was a doting father who bought the children presents and took them to restaurants.

But the man had a dark side, including a history of violence and mental problems that culminated in Ana’s death.

Matias was institutionalized after trying to set a car on fire with his children inside in Pennsylvania, police said. Family members said it was only after one of his sons said goodbye to his sister that Matias changed his mind and decided not to torch the car.

It was not clear why he continued to have visitation rights. Family members said that before Ana’s death, Matias had wanted to seek psychiatric help. They said he had applied for Medicaid insurance to cover the expense of counseling but was denied.

Matias called 911 the morning of Feb. 16, saying he had strangled Ana the night before and dumped her body in a wooded area of the Bronx, according to police.

But when officers searched his apartment building, for which he was superintendent, they discovered her body in the boiler.

During an earlier hearing, prosecutor Elizabeth McGrath read from a rambling statement Matias gave to police and prosecutors. It detailed how he initially picked up a bat – but, fearing blood, instead tied a knot around an electrical cord and used it to strangle Ana.

“I want to serve 30 to 50 years,” Matias said, according to the statement. “I strangled her. I choked her. I killed her.”

Before he dialed 911, he phoned his cousin, Pablo Castillo, who rushed to the apartment, went down to the basement with police and saw a body in the boiler.

“I looked for about a second and then I could not look anymore. I saw part of a burned body. I couldn’t look anymore. I couldn’t believe it,” he said in Spanish after the crime came to light.

Police: Man’s Abuse Sends Infant Son To Hospital ICU

BRISTOL, Va. – A city man is accused of sending his infant son to the hospital with multiple skull fractures, then skipping town after being questioned by police.

The six-month-old was taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center by his mother and live-in grandmother. Hospital staff called police around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, when they determined the four fractures on the left side of the boy’s head were likely not caused by an accident, police said.

The child was in intensive care until Thursday afternoon.

The baby’s father, Quincy Lamont Bolden, 23, of Clinton Avenue, was arrested Tuesday, some 750 miles away, at his mother’s house in Winnebago County, Ill., just outside of Rockford.

Bristol Virginia Police Detective Sgt. Steve Crawford said Thursday they do not yet know exactly what happened to the child, but “force was used to fracture his skull.” They suspect alcohol was involved, he said.

The mother and grandmother discovered the baby screaming and, after realizing he had a head injury, rushed him to the hospital.

The grandmother told police that her daughter’s live-in boyfriend, the baby’s father, made physical sexual advances toward her very early Sunday, according to Crawford. She turned him down, and he was left alone with the baby for a time, he said.

The family – the child’s mother, father, grandmother and 18-month-old sister – moved to Bristol about a year ago from Winnebago County and were planning to move back, Crawford said. They’d already rented a moving van.

Police questioned Bolden and then left to obtain arrest warrants for charges of child abuse and sexual battery, the latter stemming from the accusations of unwanted physical advances on the grandmother.

Meanwhile, before he could be arrested and charged, Bolden packed up the rental truck and headed out, leaving his girlfriend and two children behind. Police contacted Winnebago County, and authorities there picked him up at his mother’s house.

Bolden had outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court in both Winnebago County and neighboring Boone County, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

Crawford said Thursday that the “cute, little baby” is going to be OK, although his exact condition was not known late Thursday.

The Department of Social Services is involved, monitoring the child and the family environment, he said.

Bolden is being held without bond awaiting an Oct. 19 extradition hearing.

SOMBA K’E/YELLOWKNIFE – According to several witnesses testifying for the prosecution in NWT Supreme Court Monday, Christopher Dahlberg is a loving, caring father – if a little prone to the normal frustrations of raising two young boys.

One witness, who rented a room to Dahlberg’s family, described the children as “happy, content,” adding the two boys were always well-fed, well-bathed and well-clothed.

If anything, witnesses described the 31-year-old Yellowknife man, who is charged with assaulting his youngest child, as a pretty average guy.

Dahlberg has pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated assault in connection to an Oct. 22, 2007 incident in which his baby son suffered a seizure. The baby was rushed to Stanton Territorial Hospital and later medevaced to Edmonton.

Crown prosecutor Shannon Smallwood called six witnesses Monday, including two of Dahlberg’s roommates, the emergency room doctor and the mother of Dahlberg’s children.

In addition to describing Dahlberg as a parent, witnesses were also asked to recall what they remembered about the incident. Dahlberg was alone with the children at the time – his wife was working a shift at one of the diamond mines for the past three weeks – but others were in the house.

One of those other people was Dahlberg’s roommate, the same woman who described the children as happy and content. She said she was woken by a panicked Dahlberg in the early hours of Oct. 22 banging on her bedroom door.

He said “Emily, Emily. Help. I need help,” she testified, adding, “He was pretty panicked. He was huffing and puffing.”

The woman said she took one look at the baby and recognized the infant’s grey pallor and rigid body as signs of a seizure – her own child also suffered from them as a kid.

“I said to Chris you have to get him to the hospital now,” she said. She told him not to worry about changing the baby’s blood and vomit-stained sleeper, she added.

The child was admitted to emergency room 102 at Stanton Territorial Hospital. The emergency doctor testified Dahlberg seemed concerned, but there were times when he seemed quickly relieved and then concerned again.

The doctor added he was surprised Dahlberg was so relieved when the baby stopped seizuring, saying most parents stay concerned even after the fact. He made a note on his records that he needed to rule out the possibility of abuse, finding few other possible reasons for the seizure.

That night, said the doctor, Dahlberg offered no reasons for the seizure. A police officer testified Dahlberg also seemed scared to divulge details of the incident, crying and telling the officer, “I want to tell you the truth, but I’m scared. I don’t know what to do … You won’t believe me.”

The trial continues Wednesday, with more witnesses expected to testify.

His defence lawyer is Thomas Boyd.

Can’t say I’m surprised. When I saw earlier accounts of UNNAMED DAD taking off with a pregnant 12-year-0ld daughter, rape and incest seemed the most likely explanation.

Hat tip to Joan for finding this.

Police: 12-Year-Old Daughter Got Pregnant While Living With Dad

UPDATED: 6:21 pm EDT October 4, 2009

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A North Carolina father, accused of abducting two of his daughters, has been charged with rape and incest, authorities said.

The 40-year-old man sparked a nationwide Amber Alert when police said he took his adopted daughters to Tennessee in late September. The oldest daughter is 12-years-old and eight months pregnant, police said.

Investigators have not said whether they believe the man is the father of his daughter’s baby but said the girls were living with the father when she became pregnant.

The man is married to the girls’ biological mother but authorities said the two are separated.

Authorities also said at least one of the girls was a victim of a sex-related crime.
